Exploring the United States

View Comments

I’ve always wanted to do a road trip across the United States of America. Tomorrow, I’m finally going to get the chance to do so. My girlfriend, Katie, and I are setting off tomorrow from her family’s home in Sarasota, FL and we’ll be on the road for a little over a week before coming to a rest in Seattle, WA. I’m pretty excited about driving through a large swath of the Southern part of the United States and getting a small chance to see what it’s like. If you’ve got any recommendations for stops we might want to make along the way, please let me know. Our route currently looks like this, but we might make some detours for compelling reasons :)

Ok. Just glancing @ your route, a few suggestions. When Sostermann'n'I took the 'southern route' many years ago, we stopped at the unclaimed baggage center. Worth a trip. http://www.unclaimedbaggage.com/

I would also dip up from El Paso and check out White Sands/get some chile in Hatch, or some such.

    Drive safely.

Awesome, thanks Ari! Would love to find some good chili. Unfortunately
I think the unclaimed baggage center is a bit out of the way but it
looks pretty cool – had never heard of that before.

Robi, You're welcome in Baton Rouge! We're a little over an hour from New Orleans, on good old (Claremont) Route 10. Guest room avec futon is all yours. Alternatively, if your New Orleans hosts are busy one night, we could explore Frenchman Street (live music district in central NO).

Try and go through the Painted Desert during the day- it's an amazing sight.

Wow, thanks Rosanne, that is so generous of you! I had no idea you were in baton rouge. Unfortunately, I think we won't be able to swing by, we're staying in New Orleans tonight and then have to put in a pretty long day in order to make it to Austin, but I really appreciate the offer. The painted desert looks awesome, we'll try to add it in!

Looks like a great trip! What is the total distance?

Hey Rob, the end mileage was about 3,800 miles. Lengthy but fun :)

Have you enjoyed your stay at FL, sorry for the late reply but have you visited Fort Lauderdale Beach and what have you done in clear waters.. I've been there before and I really enjoyed my stay.
